"I am the Way the Truth and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father but by Me."
—Jesus Christ, John 14:6

The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments are paraphrased here. They are written in their entirety below

  1. I Am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  2. Do not make an image of anything in heaven or of anything on the earth below or of anything in the waters below the earth and worship it.
  3. Do not take the Name of the LORD in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. Do not commit murder.
  7. Do not commit adultery.
  8. Do not steal.
  9. Do not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. Do not covet your neighbor's possessions.

The Ten Commandments are recorded in Exodus 20:2-17 and are repeated in Deuteronomy 6:6-21.

In the New Testament, Jesus gave us two commandments: 1.) Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. 2.) Love your neighbor as yourself. He said that all the law and the prophets, including the Ten Commandments, hang on these two. See Matthew 22:36-40 and Mark 12:28-31 (Jesus quoted these from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18).

The Ten Commandments taken from the King James Version:

  1. Exodus 20:2-3 "I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. {3} Thou shalt have no other gods before me."

  2. Exodus 20:4-6 "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: {5} Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; {6} And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."

  3. Exodus 20:7 "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain."

  4. Exodus 20:8-11 "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. {9} Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: {10} But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: {11} For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."

  5. Exodus 20:12 "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."

  6. Exodus 20:13 "Thou shalt not kill."

  7. Exodus 20:14 "Thou shalt not commit adultery."

  8. Exodus 20:15 "Thou shalt not steal."

  9. Exodus 20:16 "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour."

  10. Exodus 20:17 "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's."

The Commandments of Jesus:

  1. Matthew 22:37-38 "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. {38} This is the first and great commandment."

  2. Matthew 22:39-40 "And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. {40} On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."
