NOTE:

This study contains several references to The Book of Enoch. While I do not doubt the veracity (or the probable scriptural integrity) of The Book of Enoch, it is not currently considered scripture. It is, however, referenced in scripture in Jude verse 14. I use The Book of Enoch here only to corroborate what the Bible says. I want to go on record when I say that the BIBLE AND ONLY THE BIBLE is our authority on the matters discussed in this study, The Book of Enoch is not. The present form of The Book of Enoch was written circa the second century BC but the original from which the Qumran texts were taken, is assumed to be very old, possibly from Enoch, the seventh from Adam, himself. Fragments of it were found at Qumran dating to 200 BC. For more information on The Book of Enoch go to the Enoch study site.

(Gen 5:1) This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

The word for generations, towleda (Strong's 8435), means "family History or descent." This book or actually, writing, is about Adam's descendants. After this chapter and verse, most times the Hebrew word, 'adam refers to The Man Adam, that is, the man named Adam. So the verse would be better translated "This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created Adam [man in the KJV], in the likeness of God made he him;" Adam (as well as all mankind--see Gen 1:26) was created in the image of God. Likeness is demuwth (Strong's 1823), which means resemblance.

(Gen 5:2) Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

God created all mankind as male and female. Here, we are looking strictly at Adam's family, the Adamites. The descendants of Adam are called Adamites. They are of the Adamic race. At one time, historians knew them as the Aryan race. Because of what Adolf Hitler did to the word Aryan, I will refer to them as the Adamites. Aryans are not just the tall, blonde, blue eyed race that Hitler claimed. They are the Adamites. Some Adamites are tall and have blue eyes and blonde hair, but not all. Hitler made a distinction between Aryans and Jews. But, in reality, there is no distinction. Jews, as well as all of the other tribes of Israel, are Aryans. Hitler made the word Aryan illegitimate. I believe, and this is just an opinion, that Satan wanted Hitler to do this to obfuscate the true meaning of the word in order to prevent posterity from knowing the truth about the twelve tribes of Israel and their impact on history. God is telling us that the Adamites are just like the other races in that they are male and female. He called their name Adam. They are Adamites.

Here is the Encyclopedia Britannica article on the Aryans:

(from Sanskrit arya, "noble"), a people who, in prehistoric times, settled in Iran and northern India. From their language, also called Aryan, the Indo-European languages of South Asia are descended. In the 19th century the term was used as a synonym for "Indo-European" and also, more restrictively, to refer to the Indo-Iranian languages. It is now used in linguistics only in the sense of the term Indo-Aryan languages.

During the 19th century there arose a notion--propagated most assiduously by the Comte de Gobineau and later by his disciple Houston Stewart Chamberlain--of an "Aryan race," those who spoke Indo-European languages, who were considered to be responsible for all the progress that mankind had made and who were also morally superior to "Semites," "yellows," and "blacks." The Nordic, or Germanic, peoples came to be regarded as the purest "Aryans." This notion, which had been repudiated by anthropologists by the second quarter of the 20th century, was seized upon by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis and made the basis of the German government policy of exterminating Jews, Gypsies, and other "non-Aryans."

Hitler corrupted this word and Skinheads still do so today. Their Aryans are a myth.

(Gen 5:3-4) And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: {4} And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:

After Abel and Cain, Seth was born to Adam. Abel was dead, Cain was banished, and so Seth became Adam's firstborn. That is why Seth is the next person chronicled in this family history. After Seth was born, Adam and Eve had other children of both sexes. This invalidates the theory that Cain's wife was one of his sisters. Cain had been banished and gotten married by the time Seth was born.

Again, after Seth was born, then Adam lived eight hundred more years and begat other sons and daughters. It is the line of Seth to which God directs our attention. It is through the line of Seth and the others named in this genealogy that Messiah would come, and not through the other sons and daughters begotten by Adam and Eve.

I do believe that the men chronicled here actually lived to the literal ages listed.

(Gen 5:5) And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

Adam lived 930 real, solar years. The Hebrews usually counted 360 days per year. They knew the solar year was actually 365.242 days, so they occasionally added an extra month, an intercalary month, to make up the difference. Adam was actually 930 when he died. This is not allegory.

(Gen 5:6-21) And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos: {7} And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: {8} And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died. {9} And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan: {10} And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: {11} And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died. {12} And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel: {13} And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: {14} And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died. {15} And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared: {16} And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: {17} And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died. {18} And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch: {19} And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: {20} And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died. {21} And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:

One can add the years together to get a timeline. It would be a good study to get a Strong's Concordance, or a similar book, and translate all these names.

(Gen 5:22-23) And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: {23} And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:

Enoch was the seventh from Adam (Jude 14). Seven is the number of Divine Perfection. Enoch means teaching, or initiation, or disciplined. He walked with or was intimate or conversant with God. He was disciplined in the Word of God, which he received from God.

There are many traditions about Enoch. While we are not interested in the traditions of men where the Word of God is concerned, tradition is a very legitimate way to follow history. Much of what we call history is written tradition. Examples of this would be the Welsh Triads, the Indian Vedas (which speak of the Aryans), and the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. These are combinations of history, traditions, folklore, and mythology. History can be gleaned from them.

There is a writing called the Book of Enoch (see the Enoch site). This writing is quoted in the Bible in Jude 14-15: (Jude 1:14-15) "And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. "

The last phrase is a direct quote from 1 Enoch 1:9. I quote 1 Enoch 1:9 in its entirety here:

"And behold! He cometh with ten thousands of His holy ones to execute judgment upon all, and to destroy all the ungodly: and to convict all flesh of all the works of their ungodliness which they have ungodly committed, and of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him."

The fact that the Bible, the inerrant Word of God, quotes from the book of Enoch, gives that book credence. You can read the Book of Enoch here. The book of Enoch was known to Jesus and the apostles and may help in our understanding of the Bible today. For example, it helps us to understand the true identity of the "wicked," the "tares" and the "serpent." It teaches that angels could take bodily human form. We know all of these things from the Bible, but it is interesting that an (supposed) extra-biblical book can give us those meanings, too. The Book of Enoch was written BEFORE the advent of Jesus the Christ. The book has been found in the Dead Sea Scrolls proving its existence in pre-Christian times. The text has changed little in those 2200 years.

The reason I bring all this up is that the Book of Enoch is startlingly correct in its prophecy of the coming Messiah. The Book of Enoch calls the Messiah "the Son of Man" just as Jesus called himself. It tells us that the Messiah, the Son of Man, will judge mankind. (Remember the book of Enoch predates Christ by at least 200 years) I quote Enoch 69:27:

"And he [the Son of Man] sat on the throne of his glory,
And the sum of judgment was given unto the Son of Man,
And he caused the sinners to pass away and be destroyed from off the face of the earth,
And those who have led the world astray."

The book of Enoch gives us the names of the Archangels and their vocations. It details much of the hierarchy of the angels, and it even names them. It tells us about how the angels left their first habitation and married the daughters of Adam and produced giants. It tells that the flood of Noah was sent to destroy the offspring of the angels.

There is a lot of good information in the Book of Enoch which is biblically correct. If anyone wants a fuller understanding of God's Word, and since God quotes from it in Jude 14, I suggest reading the Book of Enoch.

(Gen 5:24) And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Enoch "walked" with God. The use of the term is figurative here. Just as we figuratively use the word for our own relationship with God, i.e., our Christian walk. Enoch walked with God in that he was intimate with God and knew God's words, and was a man after God's own heart (as was David). The word translated "walked" can also mean conversant. Enoch was conversant with God on a very personal level. The Book of Enoch shows Enoch being taken into God's presence in heaven just like Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Isaiah, and John. The description in the Book of Enoch is similar to the descriptions of the other four given in the Bible.

The words "and he was not" are the translation of the Hebrew word 'ayin, Strong's 369, which means "to become nothing." Again, we are helped to understand this by the Book of Enoch. Enoch 106:7 & 8 state: "for his [Enoch's] dwelling-place is amongst the angels." Enoch was taken away by God before he died and he went to dwell with God and the angels. He was transfigured and taken away.

Note: I am not canonizing the Book of Enoch, just using it to help us understand what happened to Enoch. I believe, though, that the Book of Enoch is probably an actual account of Enoch's words and perhaps should be canonized. A straight reading of the text in Genesis does not give us any clue that Enoch was translated by God. We find that in Hebrews 11:5, ("By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.") and in the Book of Enoch (above).

(Gen 5:25-28) And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech: {26} And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: {27} And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died. {28} And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:

I really believe that Methuselah lived to be literally 969 earth years (of 365.25 days) old.

(Gen 5:29) And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.

Noah (Heb. Noach) means quiet or rest. Noah did not get much of his namesake. He built an ark, filled it with provision, and then loaded all the animals of his world into the big boat, then suffered through the flood, etc. I'm kidding. Obviously, he was named Noah because of the comfort he gave.

(Gen 5:30-32) And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters: {31} And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died. {32} And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

This finishes the generations of Adam.

(Gen 6:1-2) And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, {2} That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

There is much controversy on who these "sons of God" (beni ha elohim). Some will argue vehemently that these were simply men. They either do not understand God's Word, or they have an agenda. That these "sons of God" are angels is not open for interpretation. There is simply no other way to explain the giants which are their offspring, or the fact of Noah's being "perfect in his generations," or the flood.

Everywhere the term beni ha elohim or sons of God is used in the OT (except Dan 3:25), it depicts angels. Before we study those verses, let us take a look at what a son of God is. The Bible tells us that "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. " (John 3:6). Men are born of the flesh, and spirit is born of The Spirit. In other words, a son of man is born of flesh, and a son of God is born of God's Spirit. A son of God is one who is the direct creation of God. Adam was a son of God. God directly created him. Lucifer also, as well as Michael and Gabriel were created directly by God and they are sons of God. God did not directly create you or me. We are born of the flesh. We came from our mothers' wombs and cannot be said to be direct creations of God. Therefore we are sons of man (as was Jesus at His first advent). When we receive salvation, we are "new creatures" in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17) and are born from above (John 3:16). We then become the sons of God because of our new nature which was created by the Spirit of God.

That the sons of God were angels is attested by the following scriptures: Job 1:6, 2:1, 38:7, Psa 29:1, and 89:6. In Psalm 29:1, the words beni ha elohim are translated "the mighty." In every case where the words beni ha elohim are found (except one) the meaning is angels. The one exception is Daniel 3:25 where the three men in the fiery furnace are accompanied by one like a Son of God. That is beni ha elohim. Most accept that Son of God to be Jesus the Christ, Who is not an angel (despite what the cults might say). a

There are three other writings that corroborate our use of the words "sons of God" as angels. One is the Septuagint (LXX), the Greek translation of the Old Testament. In our verse (Gen. 6:2) the words beni ha elohim (sons of God) are rendered "angels" by the Septuagint (huioi tou theou, hoi aggeloi tou theou [sons of God also angels of God] --LXX Gen 6:2). Josephus tells us "For many angels of God accompanied with women, and begat sons that proved unjust, and despisers of all that was good, on account of the confidence they had in their own strength; for the tradition is, that these men did what resembled the acts of those whom the Grecians call giants." (Antiquities Book I 3.1) The other writing is the Book of Enoch. The Book of Enoch goes into great detail describing these fallen angels. It even names them.

Both the context, and the other witnesses in the Bible tell us that these sons of God were angels. There are plenty of related witnesses. Jude six tells us that these angels left their first habitation or residence, which is Heaven, and because of that, they are held in chains awaiting the judgment (which is corroborated again by the Book of Enoch). Those angels sinned and are reserved unto judgment (2 Pet. 2:4) and are presently in prison (1 Pet. 3:19). Yes, these sons of God were angels who came to earth and married the daughters of Adam in order to corrupt the seed line of Christ.

(Gen 6:3) And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

This may seem like an aside, but it is actually a way of recording the date which is AM 810 or 3194 BC (AM is the number of years since Adam's creation). This verse translates ha adam (The Man) as mankind, but it really isn't. When the article (ha) is present, it means Adam. So read the verse thus: My spirit shall not always strive with Adam, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. Adam would die in 120 years. There are other ways to look at this verse. One is to assume that this means it was 120 years before the flood. Another is to assume it means that men will live no longer than 120 years. This assumption is dubious because men lived 800-900 years on the average at this time.

So, 120 years after this date, Adam died. What this means, is that the angels who left their first habitation, were present in the time of Enoch. Enoch was born in AM 622 (3382 BC) and was translated in AM 987 (3017 BC), and the first irruption of angels was in AM 850 (3194 BC), so Enoch was prophesying at that time. Actually, most of the Book of Enoch is about those angels and their offspring, and their ultimate judgment.

(Gen 6:4) There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

The giants were on earth in what days? The days mentioned in the previous verse, the days of Enoch, 120 years before Adam's death. When were the giants here? In "those days" and later, "also after that." So there were giants before and after the flood. Who were these giants? They were the Nephillim, or fallen ones. The word rendered giants is nephiyl. Here is Strong's definition:

"5303. nephiyl, nef-eel'; or nephil, nef-eel'; from 5307; prop., a feller, i.e. a bully or tyrant:--giant."

"5307. naphal, naw-fal'; a prim. root; to fall."

These giants were fallen ones. They were bullies and tyrants. The Book of Enoch tells us more:

[Chapter 6]1 And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto 2 them beautiful and comely daughters. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men 3 and beget us children.

[Chapter 7]1 And all the others together with them took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms 2 and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. And they 3 became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells: Who consumed 4 all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against 5 them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and 6 fish, and to devour one another's flesh, and drink the blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.

Let's reprint verse four here: (Gen 6:4) There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

These Giants, or Nephillim, were the product of the union between the sons of God and the daughters of Adam. Some teach that angels are sexless. Jesus said that angels do not marry in heaven. But on earth, angels are always men. The angels at Lot's house did not seem sexless to those Sodomites who surrounded the house demanding to know (have homosexual relations with) them. On earth angels take on the form of men allowing them to be able to procreate like men.

Their offspring became mighty men of old who were renowned. Renowned for what? It sounds like they were great men of history. The key lies in the Hebrew. The word translated renown is shem (pronounced "shame"). While shem can mean a mark of honor, it can also mean a mark of debasement or infamy. It is just a coincident that shame in English sounds like shem in Hebrew and the two have similar meanings. The word rendered mighty is gibbowr which means tyrant or bully. 1 Sam 17:5, tells us that Goliath was a gibbowr! (Remember that there were giants on earth at Noah's time and also after that). And, of course the word for giant, nephiyl, also means tyrant or bully. These men of renown were renowned for their wickedness. The Book of Enoch corroborates this for us. Dr. Bullinger said that these giants were the so-called heroes of mythology.

(Gen 6:5) And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

The thoughts, intentions, and being of men (the sons of Adam) were evil every day all day. There was no righteous thought in them. This was brought on by the Nephillim. Verse 9 indicates that all men were of the corrupted seed of the Nephillim except Noah and his family.

This is a good time to discuss what the word translated "earth" means. Let us look at Strong's definition:

776. 'erets, eh'-rets; from an unused root prob. mean. to be firm; the earth (at large, or partitively a land):-- X common, country, earth, field, ground, land, X nations, way, + wilderness, world.

Young's:

'erets: Earth or land.

Vines' (several quotes):

'eres "land (the whole earth); dry land; ground; land (political); underworld . . . the word often represents the whole surface of this planet . . .

'eres sometimes means land as contrasted by water

'eres refers to the physical ground under the feet of men and animals

'eres may be used geographically, i.e., to identify a territory

'eres sometimes bears a political connotation and represents both a given political territory and the people who live there.

I show you these because I want you to understand that there are many meanings for the word 'erets or 'eres. Of course usually only one application is used in any given scripture. You cannot assign every definition to the word every time it is written. But there is little doubt, that given the context, that is the sons and daughters or Adam, one race, it would seem that the word means a territory. So the flood took place in the area or territory where the progeny of Adam lived. They lived east of Eden.

I believe Eden was located on the Pamir Plateau in China, and that the Adamites moved east of there into the Tarim Basin. The Tarim Basin is a dry swamp today, but at one time it was dry land. There is evidence of people living there at one time in history. Burial sites have been found there. It is bordered on the west by the Pe-Shan mountains, the highest of which is named Ararat (which means "the highest peak). (See Tracing our Ancestors by Frederick Haberman, pp20-21). There is evidence of a great flood in that area. There is also a Chinese tradition that says that the flood of Noah was in this area. Other flood traditions place the flood in a local and not a worldwide context.

And I feel that the flood was probably a local flood. The exact reason for the flood is to destroy the Nephillim, which were born only to the daughters of Adam and the Adamic race. The irruption of angels of 6:1-4 was the second attempt of Satan to keep Messiah from coming. The first was the seduction of Eve in the garden. Others were: The sale of Joseph into Egypt, the famine in Canaan which almost destroyed Jacob's family, the killing of the baby Hebrew males in Egypt, the killing of the male children by Herod, the temptation of Christ, the attempts to kill Jesus during His ministry, and the crucifixion. There were many others, including a second irruption of angels to occupy Canaan. See The Companion Bible, Appendix 23. The flood took place in the land of Adam to destroy those progeny of angels who were there to usurp the seed line of Christ. It was not necessarily worldwide. This is not heresy, just good, in-depth Bible study. The entire Bible is about Jesus the Christ, beginning with Genesis 1:1 and ending with Revelation 22:21, and the flood was about Him as well.

(Gen 6:6-7) And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. {7} And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

The two instances of "man" that are underlined are in the Hebrew 'eth ha 'adam or "The Man," that is Adam. Read the verse thus: "And it repented the LORD that he had made Adam [or the Adamites] on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy Adam [or the Adamites] whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them." Where were the Adamites? East of Eden, in (I believe) the Tarim Basin, which is the "earth (or land)" of these verses.

(Gen 6:8-9) But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. {9} These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

Why did Noah find Grace in God's eyes? Not because of his own merit, which was just, but because he was "perfect in his generations." What does that mean? I quote from The Companion Bible, Appendix 26:

"The Heb. Word tamin (8549) [perfect] means without blemish, and is the technical word for bodily and physical perfection, and not moral. Hence it is used of animals of sacrificial purity. It is rendered without blemish in Ex. 12.5; 29.1. Lev. 1.3, 10; 3.1, 6;4.3, 23, 28,32; 5.15,18; 6.6; 9.2, 3; 14.10, 22.19; 23.18. Num. 76.14; 28.19, 31; 29.2, 8 13, 20, 23, 29, 30, 32, 36. Ezek. 43.22, 23, 25; 45.18, 23; 46.4, 6, 13.

"Without spot. Num. 19.2; 28.3, 9, 11; 29.17, 26.

"Undefiled. Ps. 119.1

"This shows that Gen. 6.9 does not speak of Naoh's moral perfection, but tells us that he and his family alone had preserved their pedigree and kept it pure, in spite of the prevailing corruption brought about by the fallen angels. See Ap. 23 and 25."

The word rendered generations is towleda (6662), which means family history or pedigree. The root is yalad (3205) which means to bear children and declare pedigrees. Noah and his family were pure, pedigreed Adamites, the seed line of Christ. They had not mixed with the angels, therefore, God would save them from the flood.

Next, more on the flood of Noah.
